The particular challenge of this project was the engagement with the existing buildings, which had to be integrated into the overall concept and technically and architecturally redesigned. The workshop areas and boarding house from the 70s were built back to their shell substance. The renovation was carried out while the education programs were running, which slowed down the building process.
An energy-saving renovation of the facade was possible after removing the precast concrete facade of the existing buildings. The small additons to the ground-floor workshop area and the 4-storey buildings were remove. The buildings then have been dressed in a visually and technically sustainable brick facade and their interior has been renovated to modern standards.
The new building consists of a classroom level, a floor with offices, administrative areas and conference rooms and the upper two floors house boarding rooms and common areas. These are oriented towards an open atrium, which is integrated into the building on the east side and provides the rooms with sufficient daylight. The outer skin is regularly interrupted by special window elements that are arranged in a fine frame and ensure a sound-proof continuous ventilation of the rooms via white, double shell side panels.
