Die Wilhelma is building a new elephant habitat- in January, Finance Minister Dr. Danyal Bayaz, Wilhelma Director Dr. Thomas Kölpin and Chairman of the Supporters’ Association Prof. Georg Fundel officially marked the start of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The project follows a sustainable low-tech concept. A thermal envelope built to passive-house standards, combined with a triple-glazed dome, significantly reduces energy consumption. The hall will be mostly naturally ventilated, with decentralized ventilation and heat recovery operating only during colder periods.
In winter, solar heat gains through the glass roof and an innovative geothermal system installed along the outer shell of the Rosenstein Tunnel provide comfortable indoor temperatures with very low CO₂ emissions. In summer, a chimney effect keeps the hall cool, supported by evaporative cooling from the elephant pools. The fully glazed roof ensures excellent daylight conditions, minimizing the need for artificial lighting even in winter.
The new Elephant World will offer spacious indoor and outdoor habitats with several water basins. Around 5,400 square meters of indoor space and 14,500 square meters of outdoor area will accommodate up to 15 adult elephants. Photovoltaics, sustainable rainwater management and the integration of waste heat from the Rosenstein Tunnel further enhance the project’s environmental performance.
