Experimental Cloud, Francfort sur Main, Allemagne
The objective was to create a stable indoor cloud as part of the show “Constructing Atmospheres” at the exhibition Light & Building / Aircontec 2002. Twice a day a several-hundred-cubic-meter-large cloud was generated from air layers of varying humidity and temperature inside the Galleria Frankfurt in a single-glazed linear atrium connecting wings of various exhibition spaces. By creating a stable temperature stratification within this large air volume, the induced saturated water vapor stayed within the given boundaries. At nightfall the Experimental Cloud has been transformed into an illuminated body hanging over the Cloud Club.
To set up the cloud, tests and measurements were done in a laboratory and on-site from the 1:1 mock-up. TRNSYS was used for thermal simulation and FLUENT for the transient air flow simulation.
