International Highrise Award 22/23: Sustaining structures saves 7,500 tons CO2

The Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney, Australia, is the winner of the International Highrise Award 2022/23, which is given every two years by the three partners City of Frankfurt am Main, Deutsches Architekturmuseum and DekaBank. The design team is led by 3XN as design architects, cooperating with the local architect BVN, the structural engineers from BG&E and ARUP signing responsibility for mechanical, facade and sustainability. The client is AMP Capital.

In his laudatio jury member Matthias Schuler highlights the most important feature of the sustainabilty evaluation (minute 01:07:00): the client and design team decided to reuse the structure of the existing tower saving 7,500 - 12,000 tons of CO2 equivalent. With this sustaining measure, the building becomes a lighthouse project and stands for necessary responsibility to slow down climate change by reducing CO2 emissions by all means.

The winning project was announced at a festive awards ceremony in Frankfurt's Paulskirche on November 8th.
