Anneliese Brost Musikforum

The central foyer of the new music center in the Viktoria Quartier is a miners' church from 1868. On the south side of the secularized church is the concert hall of the Bochum Symphony with about 900 seats, on its north side, a flexible multifunctional hall for the music school.
Around 22,000 private investors have contributed to the financing of the music venue in the city of 370,000 inhabitants. Among the donors to the steadily growing costs is Anneliese Brost, the publisher of the German newspaper, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. The new forum is named after her.
Transsolar developed a concept for the music center, focusing on low operating costs while meeting the requirements for comfort. The thermal behavior of the concert and multifunctional halls was predicted by using dynamic building simulation. The building envelope is thermally insulated in accordance with EnEV regulations. The building is operated according to demand; that is why it has been divided into zones, each equipped with different conditioning strategies. The former church is heated only for events. The event rooms are mostly kept at about 19 ° C and heated up if necessary. Only rehearsal rooms, administration and instrument storage are heated continuously. The latter is separately conditioned especially for instruments.
By comparing actual vs. setpoint system temperatures, it is decided whether the air / geothermal heat exchanger (otherwise known as an earth duct) is used. Room air is humidified separately as needed. The multifunctional room has mechanical ventilation but no humidification. The administration area and church are ventilated exclusively via windows. Underground geothermal heat exchangers under the floor plate of the concert hall temper the supply air and keep the hall mostly below 25°C in the summer. Air is exhausted passively through the church tower with stack effect. The ventilation systems run when needed, if measured CO2 rates are too high, or according to a time schedule. The ventilation unit includes heat recovery.
