Solimine House, Lynn, MA, USA

Solimine House is a senior housing complex with 150 residential units in three interconnected four- to five-storey buildings built to passive house standards. The efficient, sustainable and resilient design aims to keep the carbon footprint low, provide health and environmental benefits to residents while remaining economically affordable.
The project aims to enable people to remain in their homes regardless of their physical abilities, which often change as they age.
The spaces are designed to promote residents' wellbeing and enable safe social interactions, thereby supporting good health.
Generous openings in the corridors let in plenty of daylight, allow cross ventilation and views to the outside, which also facilitates orientation and promotes spatial perception.
Transsolar supported both the design of the building and the design of the “three-season porches”. These semi-covered outdoor areas allow residents to get some fresh air and spend time outdoors without having to leave the building. The porches are designed to provide thermal comfort over a long period of the year, using the winter sun for solar heat gains and facilitating natural air movement in the summer.
